Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Builds Careers

The Microsoft Office Specialist, also known as (MOS) is a certification that benefits anyone looking for a job. It covers all aspects of Microsoft Office, which is a necessity in all job fields. In the global job market, the Microsoft Office Specialist certification is the primary tool companies use to validate proficiency in the latest productivity tools. Moreover, it is vital in helping them to select job candidates based on this highly regarded standard.

The Microsoft Office Specialist certification tests your knowledge on Microsoft Office, specifically in Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Access, SharePoint and OneNote. Microsoft offers the specialist certification for all current products including Office 2016, Office 2013, Office 2010 and soon for Office 2019. Depending upon your skill and experience, you will find some certifications will be easier to prepare for, especially if you have received training in computer technology or business administration.

There are three levels of MOS certification. Each is explained below:

  • Level One—Microsoft Office Specialist: This is the foundation level of MOS credentials, which tests for five of the most often used programs in the Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook.
  • Level Two—Microsoft Office Specialist Expert: This certification level represents the second tier of MOS credentials. They build on the foundation skills covered in Level One MOS certificates to include the most advanced features of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Level Three—Microsoft Office Specialist Master: This certification level demonstrates the deepest level of skills across the Microsoft Office System. Microsoft Office Specialist Masters possess the deep and broad skill sets to effectively utilize and integrate the Microsoft Office products and features. To earn the 2016 Microsoft Office Master certificate, you must pass three core exams in Word, Excel and PowerPoint and one elective of Access or Outlook.

Each MOS certification test should take no more than four hours, and you must take it at an authorized center. They are performance-based exams that measure your skill in a number of areas.

If you’re not sure which level is right for you, keep in mind that the more you know, the more valuable you are to an organization. So stretch yourself and go the next level from where you start, knowing that about 80% of employers and recruiters look for candidates who have experience with Microsoft Office. If you already have a certification, they will be able to see the level of your knowledge and commitment before interviewing you.
